As an on-going design project the Retreat is the brainchild of fashion and product designer Pat McCarthy, whose studio is also located in the clachán.
The studio is involved creatively in the design and in the project management.

It involves planning the overall space of what was an extensive rural Irish village built in stone between 1740 and 1850, and co-ordination of a skilled team of designers and craftspeople to achieve the re-development of both the living/work spaces and extensive gardens in an organic and holistic way.

The contemporary development involves preserving and restoring the fabric of the village to provide working and living spaces suitable to our technological needs as a new community. The project was undertaken in close association with Mark Guard Architects in London.
